Hillary ’08 Second Life HQ in “Preview Stage”
April 19th, 2007 by Benjamin Duranske
Off topic a bit, especially with VB’s new, theoretically exclusive, focus on “Virtual Law,” but I came across this yesterday, and just can’t pass it by. The Hillary ’08 folks have a Second Life presence up and running, albeit in “Preview Stage.” You can find it at Platon (132,112,24) in Second Life, or just follow this SLURL.
A few things are worth noting. First, it’s an entire 65,536 square meter island (which runs $1,675 to buy, and an additional $295 a month). Second, it’s owned by the quasi-legitimate sounding “Steering Committee for Hillary Clinton 2008 Campaign in Second Life.” And third, though the effort is unquestionably more impressive than anything we’ve seen before for a politician in a virtual world, it currently looks like a mashup of a Puerto Vallarta foam party, an episode of 24, and a sleepover for middle-school girls. It has a lighthouse, a two-car bullet-proof motorcade, a fire pit, a disco floor, a helicopter, a black speedboat, a hot air balloon, two animated dolphins, and a pony-sized iridescent unicorn. Also notable: the classified ad that leads users to the island has but a single line of description: “Politics, Debate, Presidential Election, Democracy…Campaigning, Surfing, Skydiving, Fishing, Scuba Diving, Partying.”
One expects a few of these details will change over the next few weeks, so visit now and get your own screenshot, before it’s too late.
