The Second Life Bar Association will have its first large-scale organizational meeting on Wednesday, April 18th at 19:00 SLT (that’s 7:00 PM Pacific/8:00 Mountain/9:00 Central/10:00 Eastern).

We’ll be discussing several things, including officer elections, this year’s project agenda, and future meeting times.

SLBA Offices in SallowMembership is open to all legal professionals and scholars, and is currently free. There will likely be dues imposed after this meeting, so join now if you haven’t already. To join, search “Groups” in Second Life for “Second Life Bar Association” (you’ll want to use the whole name, since the search feature is notoriously picky).

If you’d like to visit the offices, here’s a SLURL that will take your SL avatar directly there. There are frequently members hanging out there, and the conference room is open for anyone to use as a quick meeting place.

Finally, you can visit the SLBA’s web-based forums. Registration is required, but nothing more than an email address is necessary. Given how little I’ve been focusing on the SLBA over the last few months, I am surprised (and pleased) to see that there are several ongoing discussions. Jump in and help shape the future of the organization.

As is often the case with virtual organizations, scheduling meetings is an issue. Many of the SLBA’s United States based members have said that weeknights are by far the best time (which is why this one is scheduled when it is) but that, of course, means that it is held in the middle of the night for our European members. I apologize to our overseas members, and I’ll try to hammer out a better schedule, or find some other solution, before the next meeting. There’s a discussion thread in the forums on this, if you’d like to weigh in.

Disclaimer: Benjamin Duranske, as Second Life avatar ‘Benjamin Noble,’ founded the SLBA and is currently the organization’s President.

    Hi Ben,

Despite my intermittent wanderings as an avatar through the SL world, the fact is that I first learned about the existence of several legal endeavors in that universe precisely through the ABA Journal issue of last March.

I feel that you project of creating a SLBA is a fascinating one and, moreover, it may also help to build up new bridges across professionals and scholars locally or globally engaged in real or fictional legal chores. It could be both, enlightening and fun.

While I am based in Europe and my watch runs 9 hours ahead of yours in SFO, my experience indicates that such a circumstance will not be a serious obstacle in interacting with others scattered across the U.S., or the rest of the world.

I would like to know what are the requirements to join the SLBA and to kindly ask you to let me know about them.

Thank you for for your attention to this note.

    Most cordially, Win

Hi Win – welcome to the site, and thanks for your comment. I’ll reply to your questions by email.

  3. [...] Having yesterday reported on law students exploring property law in SL, today more news on the legal front. Second Life contains its own bar association. They have, of course, their own website and are building up to have an important meeting next Wednesday (18th April) where it is likely they will be changing the rules to charge for membership. I’m guessing that the meeting is virtual, and is to be held within SL. If so, I believe there may exist something of a schedule conflict. Last time I checked, the grid engineers had scheduled most of April 18 as offline time. Something about updating the software, I think. Best regards to all. M.Tchou

Thanks for the note, M.Tchou. The grid is scheduled to be back up by noon, Pacific. So — fingers crossed — it’ll actually be done and stable well before the meeting at 7:00 pm, even allowing for some additional time. Hope to see you there.

You can visit http://slba.info for more on the Second Life Bar Association, but all you need to do is find the “Group” using the Second Life search tool, and then hit join (this all happens in-world).

Note that the SLURL in this article is old, and takes you to the SLBA’s original office location, not the new one. I have no idea what is there now!

    The new one is: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Malfelonius/207/67/61
